Ascension Day is today! Join us at 6.30pm this evening as we mark it with a communion service. This picture is Salvador Dali's version of events - an interesting perspective for sure. (Not sure where the nail marks in Jesus' hands and feet are though).
Before Jesus left, he told the disciples to wait for 'the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about (Acts 1:4)' - that is, the Holy Spirit. The disciples had to wait for nine days, praying, anticipating. It doesn't quite fit with the much more immediate world in which we live today!
But focussing on praying for the Spirit to come, experiencing that anticipation and longing, are all part of how we can draw near to God and we often need to be patient. This time is used by churches over the world to wait on God and pray 'Thy Kingdom Come.' If you would like a resource to help you, please do pick up a book of reflections from the table at the back of church, to use between today and Pentecost.
