As a season in the church calendar, Lent originated in the run up to Easter as a time of preparation for the baptisms that traditionally took place while celebrating new life and resurrection. The whole Christian community was invited to join those preparing for baptism in the process of study and repentance. This was extended over forty days, reminding them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan.
Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the middle ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. This season of reflection is a helpful opportunity to focus on drawing near to God, and ashes can help us to mark, tangibly, our desire to turn back to God and renew our commitment to Him.
