We celebrated it on Sunday but today is Candlemas, or the feast of the presentation of Christ in the temple. The child Jesus, who was recognised at his birth as King by the magi, is now recognized by Simeon and Anna, in the Temple. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the glory of God’s people Israel’. But Simeon's words remind us that the salvation he brings must be won through suffering - and we move our attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter.
